The UK government’s new chat interface adapts AI‑powered conversational design for mobile, focusing on accessibility, transparency and brand consistency.

The GOV.UK app now includes a dedicated chat feature that brings AI‑powered conversational design to citizens’ fingertips, while staying true to the government’s standards for accessibility, transparency and brand consistency.

Why a Chat Interface?

The chat service was introduced to help users find information quickly on mobile devices, reducing the need to navigate multiple pages. By using natural language processing, the bot can interpret a wide range of queries and direct users to the most relevant GOV.UK content.

Design Principles

The team followed three core principles: accessibility – ensuring the chat works with screen readers and supports high‑contrast modes; transparency – clearly indicating when a response is generated by AI and providing links to source documents; and brand consistency – using the same colour palette, typography and tone of voice as the rest of the GOV.UK platform.

  • Clear labelling of AI‑generated answers
  • Fallback to human‑written guidance when needed
  • Support for multiple languages and regional dialects

Technical Implementation

The chat leverages the government’s secure cloud infrastructure and integrates with the existing content API. Responses are cached for speed, and the system logs interactions anonymously to improve future performance while complying with data‑privacy regulations.

User Testing and Feedback

Extensive usability testing with diverse user groups confirmed that the chat meets WCAG 2.2 AA standards. Participants praised the clear disclosure of AI involvement and the ease of switching to a human‑written page when the bot could not answer a question.

The chat feels like a natural extension of the GOV.UK app, offering instant help without sacrificing the clarity and trust users expect.

The new chat is being rolled out to all users of the GOV.UK app, with ongoing monitoring to refine its performance and expand its knowledge base.
