The European Commission’s AI Office will begin enforcing the AI Act from Aug 2, 2026, requiring AI systems to disclose when users interact with them and to label AI‑generated content.

The European Commission’s AI Office will start enforcing the EU’s AI Act on 2 August 2026, introducing mandatory transparency measures for AI systems.

New transparency obligations

AI providers must ensure that users are clearly informed when they are interacting with an artificial intelligence system. This includes visible notices on websites, apps and any other digital interfaces where AI is employed.

In addition, any content generated by AI—such as text, images, audio or video—must carry a label indicating its synthetic origin. The label should be easily understandable and placed prominently alongside the content.

Scope of the enforcement

The rules apply to high‑risk AI systems identified under the AI Act, as well as to many other AI‑driven services that reach consumers across the EU. Providers that fail to comply could face fines of up to 6 % of their annual worldwide turnover.

Implementation timeline

The Commission will begin monitoring compliance from the enforcement date, with a transition period for existing services to update their user interfaces and labeling practices. National supervisory authorities will cooperate with the EU AI Office to conduct inspections and handle complaints.

  • Display a clear notice when users interact with AI
  • Label AI‑generated text, images, audio or video
  • Maintain documentation proving compliance
  • Allow users to request human assistance if needed

The European Commission stresses that these measures aim to increase trust in AI technologies while safeguarding fundamental rights and consumer protection.

Transparency is essential for a trustworthy AI ecosystem.
