Anthropic’s Claude Code now includes a /design command, enabling developers to generate UI mockups directly in the terminal or desktop app before writing code.

Anthropic has rolled out a new /design command for Claude Code, letting developers spin up UI mockups straight from the terminal or desktop app before they start coding.

How the /design Command Works

When invoked, /design prompts Claude to generate a visual representation of a user interface based on a textual description. The output appears as an image preview that can be viewed directly in the console window or saved for later refinement.

Developers can iterate quickly by adjusting the prompt—adding details about layout, color scheme, or component hierarchy—and Claude returns an updated mockup in seconds, streamlining the early design phase.

Benefits for Developers

  • Reduces context switching between code editors and design tools
  • Accelerates prototyping by delivering visual feedback instantly
  • Keeps design discussions within the same workflow that generates the code

The feature also integrates with Claude Code’s existing code‑generation capabilities, allowing developers to ask the model to translate the mockup into HTML, CSS, or component code with a follow‑up prompt.

Limitations and Future Plans

Currently, the mockups are limited to static images and lack interactive preview functionality. Anthropic notes that future updates may include vector outputs and direct export to design systems.

The /design command is available now for Claude Code users on both the terminal interface and the desktop application, with no additional cost beyond the existing subscription.
